The second Standard’s location in the former office building of Standard Oil became central to the design. SHD played with the architecture’s corporate history and re-envisaged the space as an ode to a bygone era when business was still alluring and stylish. The lure of the hotel, especially it’s roof deck and pool, was pivotal to the revival of Downtown Los Angeles, drawing hotel guests and local residents alike. When Mr and Mrs Smith named Shawn Hausman in their Top 10 Boutique Hotel Designers, they described the Standard as, ‘an inspired, slightly psychedelic take on Hitchcock-era decor.’
